AtOne YOGA

What is Yoga?

Yoga translates as union, yoke or join together. This refers to the union of mind, body and spirit and also the union of the individual soul with the Universal Spirit.

Yoga is a philosophy, a science and a discipline. It has many varied branches and sects. It is not considered a religion in its own right and sits alongside and compliments all faiths although it developed alongside Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and therefore contains elements of these three major Indian Religions intrinsically woven into its tenets.

Paintings of people in Yoga poses date back 5,000 years to the Harrappan culture in the Indus Valley. The first written references to Yoga are found in the stanzas of the Rig Veda dating back 3,500 years.

The yoga practiced today bears little resemblance to the yoga that began humbly some 5,000 years ago, but in its rich and varied history, yoga has always evolved to meet the needs of the culture it serves. To a casual observer, yoga is first and foremost a fitness regime that focusses on stretching. Yoga resonates far more deeply than that.

Yoga is learning to come back to yourself. It's finding your limits, expanding your boundaries and being able to truly relax into who you are.

In this respect, Yoga is like life training, its practice is a fabulous tool for transformation.

You do not need to be flexible to do Yoga, Yoga makes you flexible. It also strengthens all aspects of the body using your own body weight as the tool to apply tension to the muscles.

Yoga also has an impact on the way you view your body, enabling you to understand the impact of food and diet promoting healthier lifestyle choices.

I am a qualified Yoga teacher specialising in the practice of Vinyasa Flow and Yin and have practiced many different styles of Yoga for over 20 years.

I have also been trained to assist in guided meditation. Some people find it hard to meditate, and I have found during the practice of yoga and meditation that one-to-one guided practice can really help keep you focussed.

Both Yoga and guided meditation are more effective performed within a very quiet, calm environment, without interruptions and distractions.

I can provide one to one yoga lessons at a location of your choice.

I also teach at The Henley Yoga Studio in Henley On Thames where I offer studio Yoga Classes on an adhoc basis.

What to expect in one of my Yoga classes:

I teach two styles of Yoga - Yin & Yang.

Vinyasa Flow which is a dynamic Yang style Yoga and Yin Yoga which is a more gentle, mindful practice. I also run small group alignment workshops.

Ashtanga based Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic Yang form of Yoga that is a series of movements that raise the heart rate, gently flowing in and out of postures, working with the breath, strengthening and toning the muscles, improving concentration and calming the thoughts.

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with poses, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time—five minutes or more per pose is typical.

Yin poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility.

Thai Yoga is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures.

Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. You will remain clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the therapist and client, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked.

Some benefits of Thai Yoga are: reduces muscle tension & spasms, mobilises the joints, improves blood circulation, balances and increases energy, can treat sciatica, headaches & neck pain.

If you are attending a 121 Yoga treatment with me, this can be completely tailored to your specific needs, injury or any restricted movement you may have.

Comfortable workout wear is advisable and the practice is performed barefoot.

I qualified with Frog Lotus Yoga in RYT 200, Yin Yoga trained with Norman Blair and I am UK/US Yoga Alliance accredited.

I have been taught how to run guided meditation with Yoga Now Malaysia.
